Can also be used for microwaving and regular oven baking, but hard to grip
We were pleased to find that this container can be used for some types of COOKING, not just for storage. We had been looking for a baking dish about this size.
We like the convenience of a container that can be used for baking or microwaving, and then covered and used to store any leftovers, without the bother of scooping into a different container.
These containers do not have any handles on the sides, and glass is naturally slippery; thus these are tricky to grasp with ordinary potholders when removing from a microwave or regular oven. On the other hand, the lack of handles allows efficient space use in the refrigerator. Using "Ove Glove" potholders (the kind with fingers) is helpful with these, because we need to grasp both the top edge and the bottom at once.
The other alternative is to look for the Pyrex "Bake & Store" glass containers, which do have handles on their sides (and are also available here at Amazon). The Pyrex glass containers that have the word "Bake" somewhere in their title are the ones that have handles. Note that the Pyrex "baking" containers or "Bake & Store" are not sized exactly like the Pyrex no-handle "Storage Plus" containers, and the plastic lids are not interchangeable, generally.
The paper label (found inside this Pyrex glass container) indicates it is oven safe (in a regular oven, preheated), and microwave safe, freezer safe, and dishwasher safe. However, like most Pyrex, it is NOT broiler safe, and should not be used on stove-top burners. There is also a warning against use in a toaster oven.
The label also says that the plastic lid is BPA free, and is only for use when microwaving or storing (not to be used in a regular oven, of course). I assume we should unseal and loosen the lid, before we put it in the microwave.
The plastic lid goes on easily, and fits OK, but not perfectly tight. I think if I turned the container upside down, the contents would leak around the edges of the lid. The lid is labeled as dishwasher "top rack" only.
We have only had this for a few days, so cannot yet say how durable it is. I will add a "comment" to this review, if this product has problems later on. However, the other Pyrex glass storage containers and glass bakeware that we own have lasted for several years, with no chips.
In the past, we have bought Pyrex "Storage Deluxe" glass containers (with the vent tabs on the lids); they have endured years of frequent use with no chips. However, we eventually had to replace some of those vented plastic lids. We were able to buy replacement lids from the manufacturer's world kitchen web site and/or phone number; I assume that replacement lids for this non-vented type of storage container can also be obtained. I have heard that Pyrex outlet stores may also have replacement lids. I have not been able to find replacement lids on this site yet.
On the back of the paper label/insert, there are lots of warnings, in 3 languages (English, Spanish, French), but the print seems small (or am I just getting older and farsighted?).
The back of the label says: "Failure to follow these instructions ... may cause your glassware to break or shatter immediately or later". Many of the warnings are related to avoiding sudden temperature changes. I will mention some of the warnings and limitations in my review, so other shoppers will know whether the limitations fit with how they plan to use the container, for example: "DO NOT add liquid to hot glassware ..." Hmmm, sounds like basting is out.
The label advises: "Add a small amount of liquid sufficient to cover the bottom of the dish prior to cooking foods that may release liquid."
DO NOT "place hot glassware on a wet or cool surface, directly on countertop or metal surface, or in sink; or handle hot glassware with a wet cloth." "Allow hot glassware to cool on a cooling rack, potholder or dry cloth. Be sure to allow hot glassware to cool ... before washing, refrigerating, or freezing."
The label says this can be used in a PREHEATED conventional or convection oven. "Oven must be preheated before inserting glassware". I'm not sure why the label says preheat, but I have heard that some ovens use extra high heat during the preheat step -- higher than any regular baking temperature; but I don't know if that is true. I'm guessing that the exposure to extra high heat during preheating, could cause damage for glassware.
More warnings: When using the container in the microwave, do not use a microwave "BROWNER", and "DO NOT use glassware to microwave popcorn or foods wrapped in heat-concentrating material (such as special browning wrappers)." Do not "heat empty or nearly empty glassware in microwave". Do not "overheat oil or butter in microwave (use minimum amount of cooking time)".
The capacity is 11 cups or 2.75 quarts or 2,6 Liters.
Information about dimensions, for those who are looking for a particular size / shape for a particular recipe or storage need: The container's side walls are sloped outward at an angle. At the very bottom, the edges are rounded. Thus the length and width at the bottom are smaller than the length and width around the top edge. Approximate measurements of INTERIOR, without lid: The inside height is about 2 3/4 inches (2.75"). The inside length and width, as measured near the bottom, about 1/4" above the bottom: 8 1/4" x 6 1/4". The inside length and width near the top is 9 3/16" x 7 1/4". Exterior measurements with the plastic lid on: height is 3"; and length is 9 7/8" and width is almost 8".
