Product Reviews Can also be used for regular oven baking, roasting, and microwave too!
We were pleased to find that this container can be used for some types of COOKING, not just for storage. We had been looking for a small baking dish, about this size.
We like the convenience of a container that can be used for baking or microwaving, and then covered and used to store any leftovers, without the bother of scooping into a different container.
The paper label (found inside this Pyrex glass container) indicates it is oven safe (in a regular oven, preheated), and microwave safe, freezer safe, and dishwasher safe. However, like most Pyrex, it is NOT broiler safe, and should not be used on stove-top burners. There is also a warning against use in a toaster oven.
The plastic lid should not be used in a regular oven, of course. I assume we should unseal and loosen the lid, before we put it in the microwave.
The plastic lid goes on easily, and fits OK, but not perfectly tight. I think if I turned the container upside down, the contents would leak around the edges of the lid. I assume that if we put the lid in the dishwasher, we should only use the top rack, if at all. When we looked at reviews for some of the other Pyrex storage containers, a few reviewers recommended hand washing the lid; they thought the plastic lids might keep their shape better if hand washed.
We have only had this for a few weeks, so cannot yet say how durable it is. I will add a "comment" to this review, if this product has problems later on.
In the past, we have bought Pyrex "Storage Deluxe" glass containers (with the vent tabs on the lids); they have endured years of frequent use with no chips. However, we eventually had to replace some of those vented plastic lids. We were able to buy replacement lids from the manufacturer's world kitchen web site and/or phone number; I assume that replacement lids for this non-vented type of storage container can also be obtained. I have heard that Pyrex outlet stores may also have replacement lids. I have not been able to find replacement lids on this site yet.
On the back of the paper label/insert, there are lots of warnings, in 3 languages (English, Spanish, French), but all in very small print. I think many people will have difficulty reading the tiny print.
The back of the label says: "Failure to follow these instructions can cause immediate or later breakage ..." I will mention some of the warnings and limitations here, so shoppers will know whether the limitations fit with how they plan to use the container: "AVOID SEVERE HOT TO COLD TEMPERATURE CHANGES." "DO NOT add liquid to hot dish..." Hmmm, sounds like basting is out. The label advises: "Add a small amount of liquid to the dish prior to baking foods that release liquids while baking."
DO NOT "place hot dish ... in a sink, immerse in water or place on cold or wet surfaces." ... "Allow glass to cool before soaking."
More warnings: When using the container in the microwave, do not use a microwave "BROWNER", and "DO NOT use PYREX glassware items ... to hold or support popcorn bags, microwave convenience foods with special browning wrappers, etc."
For use in a regular oven, the label implies that we should PREHEAT the oven BEFORE putting a Pyrex glass container in the oven. I have heard that some ovens use extra high heat during the preheat step -- higher than any regular baking temperature; but I don't know if that is true. I'm guessing that the exposure to extra high heat during preheating, could cause damage for Pyrex glass containers and dishes.
Information about measurements, for those who are looking for a particular size / shape for a particular recipe or storage need: The capacity is 6 cups or 1.42 Liters. The dimensions 8 x 6 x 2" are etched on the underside of the container. The container's side walls are sloped outward at an angle. Thus the length and width at the bottom are smaller than the length and width around the top edge.
Approximate Measurements of INTERIOR: The inside height is about 2 1/8", slightly more than labeled. The inside length and width, at the bottom: 7 1/8" x 5 1/8". The length and width near the top edge: 8 1/8" x 6 1/4".
EXTERIOR measurements (approximate): At outside top edge, without the lid: 8 1/2" x 6 5/8" x 2 3/8". With the lid on: 8 3/4" x 6 13/16" x 2 7/16".
Glass beats plastic - but lid doesn't seal tightly
I have the same product but the lid is red - anyway, the lid does not seal tightly; if there is even a small amount of liquid in the container, and you tip it even briefly, it will leak. But the lid does stay on at least.
Love my Pyrex storage!
I use these Pyrex rectangular storage containers mainly for meat dishes. This 6-cup size is great for leftover meatloaf or beef brisket slices. The 3-cup rectangular often holds our beans-and-weenies leftovers, and the 11-cup rectangular is perfect for leftover roast chicken or other roasts. They go right from the fridge to the microwave and onto the table with no problem.
I own many of these rectangular and round Pyrex storage containers and I truly love them. When empty, they all nest nicely in my cupboard. I put each piece on top of its lid, then place the piece-plus-lid inside a larger size.
It's great to be able to look in my refrigerator and see at a glance what I have in there. The glass bowls never stain, so they always look great.
The Pyrex bowl just keeps on going - I've had all of mine at least 12 years. The lids, however, are another story. Washing them in the dishwasher and putting them in the microwave cause them to crack too quickly. Thankfully, replacements can be purchased online.
If I could choose only one type of storage container for my kitchen, these Pyrex glass containers with plastic lids would be my choice.
